An antenna is just a piece of metal resonating at some specific frequency and having desirable electrical properties and radiation pattern. For several months I agonized over my next computer buy. I recognized I needed to be more mobile and only a notebook computer would allow me to take my “show on the road.” All the same, the deciding formula wasn’t easy as the number of different makes and models out there is mind boggling. In the final analysis, I decided on a Dell in part because of former good experience with the company as well as affordability of their product line.

The model I decided on was the Inspiron 600m. As with just about everything that Dell builds, it is a “new” model; at least the 600m designation is. That is one of the confusing things about Dell and some other manufacturers: every month Dell presents new models and you need a scorecard to compare one model with all the others. As luck would have it, Dell’s website allows you to do just that.

I keep my computer fairly basic but I did choose for the latest version of Norton Security, a surge protected cable, a wirless router, and a wireless mouse. I picked out the wireless mouse as I thought the keyboard’s mouse would be hard to use. After two days I quit using the wireless mouse as I quickly got used to the built in one.

The screen is bright and the keyboard is solid. The mouse keys, even so are noisy, almost clunky; you question if Dell gave notice to a quieter spring for each key.

The battery lasts at least four hours without recharging and when I do need to recharge I can go from almost dead to fully charged in less than one hour.

I have not had to call customer service yet, so I cannot comment on it although in years past your call would be routed to a technician in India. This model accompanies a standard one year limited warranty; I warded off a later sales talk over the phone to get a three year warranty. Their top of the line warranty sends a technician to your house to fix your computer, so it can be option for those of you who do not want to ship — and thereby lose the use of — your computer back to Dell for repairs.

You’ll find the Inspiron 600m to be enough for standard business work. Check into their numberless other models if you do plenty of graphic design or if you need a larger screen. I’m pleased with the 14.1 screen, but you may favor their 17″ model.

Home Theater Speaker Sets

If you are low on budget, you should think of one of these. But keep in mind: don’t save on speakers, they’re very significant. There are lots of cheesy home theater speaker sets on the market, but you should not purchase one of them, since these are of poor quality. Usually, sets manufactured by well-know brands (Klipsch, Bose, for instance) produce a decent sound. This way you’ll still not spend as much as you would on separate speakers.

Going By the Piece

So, you’re serious about your future home theater, and prefer to drop a little more on the speakers? Purchasing speakers individually has many advantages: it’s the best quality you can have, and another, often unnoted advantage is that you can don’t have to buy the whole set at once, so if you haven’t got the money, you are able to still have high quality speakers in your setup.

Your front speakers should be the most potent members in your home theater speaker setup. If you’ve a small room, pick out bookshelf speakers. Larger rooms will call for larger speakers; in that case, powerful floor-standing speakers is the option to go with.

You may have heard that it is advisable to have the exact same speakers for surround and front. This is on-key, but it’s not very practical: movie sound mixes don’t use surround speakers as much as they use the front speakers. Digital video is not as dependant on megapixels as camcorder manufacturers would like to have you believe. Measuring megapixels is more important for digital cameras and still images than for camcorders. If you are only using your digital camcorder to record video than look for things like optical zoom, stabilisation etc.

Image Stabilization

Nearly every modern digital camcorder will come with some form of stabilization. Most consumer digital camcorders use electronic image stabilisation. The higher priced ones will use what’s called optical image stabilization.

When you are purchasing a digital camcorder the best way to review stabilization is to record while zooming in and out. Shaky hands will be magnified drastically if the camcorder stabilization is poor.

If you are really serious about image stabilization you should buy a tripod. The key things to look out for when you are buying a tripod is the size of the camcorder you will be using and what you will be videoing.

Look at the optical zoom rather than the digital zoom.

Optical zoom comes from the lens of your camcorder moving in an out. Optical zoom controls the camcorders ability to magnify an image. It does not take away from the quality of the final recording and gives you great close up shots

Digital zoom is the camcorders ability to magnify pixels. As the digital zoom is increased the quality of the recording decreases
If zoom shots are important to you spend your money on getting a camcorder with good optical zoom.
